This short program will include music by American composers Alice Parker and Frank Tichelli, selections from Johannes Brahms’s New Lovesong Waltzes, as well as music from Big Band. It features Prof. Michael Philip Mossman’s recent arrangement of the South African National Anthem, N’kosi Sikeleli Afrika, performed by the QC Choir and Big Band, in honor of Queens College’s Year of South Africa.
Michael Philip Mossman was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for “Best Instrumental Arrangement” for his “Afro-Latin Ellington Suite,”” and has composed and arranged music for the films “Bossa Nova” and “Chico and Rita,” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012. Prof. Mossman has directed the jazz program at Queens College for more than a decade.
Prof. James John, is Director of Choirs at the Aaron Copland School of Music, and frequently guest conducts in the United States and abroad, most recently leading the Tokyo Oratorio Society in performances of Brahms’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in 2012-2013. Profs. Mossman and John have collaborated on performances of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts (December 2013), as well as on a compact disc entitled “”La Visitatio Sepulchri de Gandia,”” which features Prof. Mossman’s unique arrangement of 16th century choral music for choir and jazz ensemble.
